Mashups- Are they the future of learning?

You have heard the old addage “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

While this might have been true in the past, it seems as though when things change now, they are just different.

With major culture shifts comes permanent change. In our quest for a quick knowledge fix, there are mashups. A mashup could normally be described as a web page that includes data from two or more sources, easily incorporated on the page (normally via web services).

The multiple listings that real estate agents share is a great example of a web service that could be included on a web page as part of a mashup. Geographical mapping data is another example of a web service. So there are consumer mashups, enterprise mashups, data mashups, and business mashups.

There are also education mashups. While you might want to believe that a single method of knowledge and understanding delivery works best, many would argue that point. With so many opiniated commentaries online, it is not safe to get all of your information from a single source anymore.

When incorporating a combination of engaging video and other forms of media, an education mashup can be quite effective in delivery of a blended learning solution. Education mashups are here to stay. We are only at the early stages of using this powerful functionality to better enable learning.
